How we conducted the cutting test
The test was created to assess how many cuts each multi-material wheel could complete under the same practical testing conditions.
The test used:
- A 125mm Alpha Multi-Material Cut-Off Wheel
- An alternative multi-material cut-off wheel
- A 125mm, 1800W Metabo corded angle grinder
- Hand-completed cuts using the same operator and cutting method
- Metal, stainless steel and aluminium
- Ceramic glazed floor tile
- Besser block
- 16mm round bar
Each wheel was tested across the different material categories, with the number of completed cuts recorded.
Because the cuts were completed by hand, the test was closer to real jobsite use than to controlled machine testing.
Up to 2.75 times the wheel life

Under the test conditions, the Alpha Multi-Material Cut-Off Wheel lasted up to 2.75 times longer than the alternative multi-material wheel.
As shown in the graph, the largest improvement in wheel life was recorded when cutting steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
For tradies cutting these materials, longer wheel life can mean:
- Fewer replacement wheels
- Fewer interruptions during cutting
- Less time spent changing discs
- More consistent productivity
- Better preparation for mixed-material jobs
Actual life will always depend on factors such as the material, grinder, cutting, pressure, operator technique and working conditions. However, under the stated test conditions, the comparison provides a useful indication of how the Alpha wheel performed against another comparable multi-material wheel.
Strong performance across metal applications
Metal cutting can generate significant heat and place the edge of a cut-off wheel under plenty of pressure. A wheel needs to maintain its cutting ability while resisting premature wear.
The graph shows the Alpha wheel delivered its strongest performance advantage when cutting steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Combined with its 1.2mm thickness, which helps produce fast, straight cuts, the wheel held up best across these metal applications under the test conditions.
Moving from metal to tile and masonry
The comparison did more than test different types of metal. We also tested the wheels on ceramic tile and Besser block to see how they handled common non-metal materials.
While the biggest difference between the two wheels was seen in the metal categories, the Alpha wheel was also able to continue cutting tile and masonry. This is a useful benefit for jobs that involve more than one material type.
For example, a renovation or installation may require a tradie to cut a metal bracket, adjust an aluminium trim, cut a tile and work around a masonry surface. Having a wheel designed for all these materials can reduce the need to stop and change accessories at every stage.
A specialised disc may still be the right choice for high-volume, single-material work but the advantage of a multi-material wheel is flexibility when the job changes or several materials are involved.
